Yes, it is possible to restore your maple wood floor. However, the restoration’s extent will depend on your floor’s condition.
If the floor has only small scuffs and scratches, it might be possible to sand and refinish the surface layer of your maple floor. The process will involve removing the old finish, sanding the wood down to a smooth feel, and applying your new chosen finish.
But if the floor has deep gouges, scratches, or other damage, replacing sections of the floor or the damaged boards may be necessary. This can be a more technical and costly process.
It is important to remember that the restoration may also depend on the type and age of maple wood used for the floor. More delicate or older wood may require a professional restoration process to avoid damaging the wood further.
Even if you don’t use a professional, they recommend consulting with a professional floor sanding contractor to assess the condition of your maple wood floor and figure out the best course of action for restoration.

DIY floor sanding Tips:
Maple wood is a resilient and durable hardwood that can be sanded and refinished quite a few times over its lifetime. The restoration process involves sanding down any imperfections in the wood and the old finish, then applying a new finish to enhance and protect the wood’s natural beauty.
Here are the general steps involved in restoring a maple wood floor:
- Step 1 – Clear the room you are going to restore:
Remove all rugs, furniture, and other items from the room you are about to restore.
- Step 2 – Prepare the floor you’re going to restore:
Vacuum and sweep the floor to remove any dust, dirt, or debris. Check for any nails, loose boards, or other damage you must repair before sanding.
- Step 3 – Sanding the maple floor:
Use a floor sander to smooth out any imperfections or scratches and remove the old finish on the wood. Start with a coarse grit and work your way up to a finer grit to get a smooth finish.
- Step 4 – Clean the floor after sanding:
Vacuum and then wipe the floor with a damp cloth… this will remove any dust from where you have finished sanding.
- Step 5 – Apply the finish you have chosen for your maple floor:
Choose a finish that suits your needs, such as water-based polyurethane lacquer or oil-based. Apply the finish with a roller or brush… always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow it to dry completely before applying a second coat if needed. The second coat will give your floor more protection, but always ensure thorough drying before doing so.
- Step 6 – Last but not least, everything back:
After the final coat has dried… you can replace any rugs and furniture. Again, ensure the floor is thoroughly dry before doing this. And now it’s time to enjoy your newly restored maple wood floor!
Why does your maple wood make for great flooring?
Not only is maple a stunning wood that looks great in every type of room… but it has some very good reasons that make it a great contender for your new wood flooring, and not just because of how stunning it looks.
Maple wood is:
- One of the most durable, hardest domestic hardwoods… even compared to oak! It can take high volumes of traffic, which is why it can work well in both commercial and residential spaces.
- More affordable than oak, so it’s great if you’re trying to keep your costs low.
- It is one of the eco-friendly choices of wood because maple has a short growing period compared to other types of wood.
- A crisp and clean-looking wood because the grain is more subtle. If this is your choice of design – clean, minimalist, simple – then maple is a perfect choice.
However, as much as maple does make for great wood flooring… there are two things that you will need to remember when doing anything with this species of wood.
- Maple is more prone to scratches even though it is highly durable. And because of its light colour, these scratches will be visible… so it does need to be treated with a protective finish and looked after with care once fitted.
- Though you can stain maple wood darker… this doesn’t always come out well, and the stain can look uneven and patchy… A professional is the better choice if this is what you want.
